Sabrina Carpenter exclaims she’s more than her sensuality

Sabrina Carpenter has been on the tip of our tongue since the release of Olivia Rodrigo’s hit “Drivers License” and the subsequent release of her single “Skin.” But Carpenter’s artistry goes beyond the stir of celebrity gossip as she gears up for the release of her seventh studio album, “Man’s Best Friend” on Aug. 29. Her first single off the album, “Manchild” has already debuted at no. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Carpenter most recently made headlines when she released the cover of her forthcoming album in a short black dress and heels, posing on her hands and knees, while a suited figure clutches a lock of her hair. The public response found the cover too provocative and even misogynistic. Such viewers took to X to share their thoughts upon its immediate release.

A particular comment caught Carpenter’s attention when an X user responded to the album cover with a scornful question: “Does she have a personality outside of sex?” the user asked. To which Carpenter responded, “girl yes and it is goooooood.” An additional comment from the same user read “[I don’t know] who actually is her fan base cuz we normal people are tired of the hypersexualisation.”

Known for her wisecracks, Carpenter made a poignant observation in the summer issue of Rolling Stone, stating, “It’s always so funny to me when people complain…They’re like, ‘All she does is sing about this.’ But those are the songs that you’ve made popular. Clearly you love sex. You’re obsessed with it.”

The long road to success

Since visiting the Philippines for the Asian leg of her “Emails I Can’t Send Tour” almost two years ago, her career has skyrocketed. From playing at venues with a 2,325-person seating capacity to performing at the 2025 Brit Awards, the two-time Grammy Award winner has seen massive success in what looks like a short period of time.

What many don’t see is that Carpenter’s career has been in the works for more than a decade, posting YouTube covers of Taylor Swift’s “Picture To Burn” at just nine years old. She then landed a five-album record deal with Disney’s Hollywood Records at 14 years old. Her fifth studio album “Emails I Can’t Send,” most notable for its range of introspective ballads and playful pop hits, was the impetus of her mainstream popularity with the attention garnered by her ‘nonsense’ outros.

These days, her concerts are most famous for her “Juno” positions, in which she’d sing the line “Wanna try out some freaky positions? Have you ever tried this one?” and act out various sex positions.

Her secret to songwriting

While many are tempted to reduce Carpenter’s success to her sexual innuendos and her sparkly lingerie, she is more confident than ever in her musical ability. In a conversation with Eric Vetro at BBC Maestro on songwriting, she stated, “There is no manual, except your own instincts are your best friend.” She emphasizes the importance of trusting your gut, especially when braving the turbulence of writing from a personal place.

Carpenter’s never been above making fun of herself, but we ought to start taking her voice more seriously.
